The Natural Selection series depicts modern zoological parks from different European cities where animals are put into spaces which mimic their original habitats.The staging of these places seems to somehow reflect the preconceived notion of what human beings believe, or more specifically what the western man believes, nature is in its pure state. In other occasions, especially when they hold large groups of animals, these places follow a purely rational type of organization, driven by criteria such as order and cleanliness, and the classification and enumeration of the members of the group.
The life of wild animals in these zoological gardens that either imitate their natural habitats or try to respond to an extreme rationalization of physical space, generates disturbing and contradictory images. The artful “territories” created for them contrast powerfully with the wild nature of the animals.

La serie Selección Natural está formada por fotografías tomadas en modernos parques zoológicos situados en diferentes ciudades europeas, en donde los animales se encuentran en espacios que intentan imitar sus hábitat originales. La escenificación de estos espacios responde, de alguna manera, a una idea preconcebida por los humanos, especialmente por el hombre blanco occidental, de lo que es la naturaleza en estado puro.
La inclusión de los animales en estos jardines zoológicos que bien imitan su hábitat natural, bien responden a una racionalización extrema del espacio, generan imágenes extrañas, inquietantes y contradictorias. El artificio de los “territorios” creados para ellos contrasta poderosamente con lo que de natural y salvaje tienen los animales.
